A Simple Guide To Syrian Hamsters

Syrian hamsters are gentle, curious little pets known for their adorable cheeks and exploratory nature. They’re solitary animals that enjoy their own space, making them a great choice for beginners who want an easy-to-handle companion. With the right setup and enrichment, they’re fascinating to watch and rewarding to care for.

Lifespan: 2-3 years

Size: 5-7in (13-18cm)

Activity: Crepuscular/nocturnal. Most active during the evening.

Sociability: Solitary

Suitability: Beginner

🏡Enclosure

  • Wire bar with solid base
  • Adequate space to divide into eating, sleeping, and toilet areas
  • Base size is more important than height, however extra stories add to the environmental enrichment
  • Bigger is better
  • Do not place in draughts, direct sunlight, near a radiator, or humid conditions

🛏️Substrate & Bedding

  • Paper pellets or kiln-dried pine wood shavings for base substrate
  • Soft, paper-based bedding
  • Avoid cedar or non-kiln-dried pine shavings, scented or fluffy bedding

🥦Diet

  • Hamster mix or nuggets
  • Small amounts of fresh veg, such as broccoli, carrot, or spinach
  • Very small amounts of protein, such as cooked chicken, boiled egg, or mealworms
  • Avoid citrus, onion, garlic, potato, iceberg lettuce
  • Fresh water should be permanently available

🧩Enrichment

  • Wheel for exercise; large and solid to prevent back arching
  • Secure hamster ball for exercise and exploration under supervision
  • Exploratory animals that enjoy tunnels, tubes, bridges and ramps
  • Cardboard for shredding
  • Chew toys and treat sticks to keep teeth trimmed
  • Scatter feeding to encourage natural foraging behaviour
  • Sand bath (using sand not dust) 2-3 times a week

🤲Handling & Behaviour

  • Curious but may be nervous at first
  • Become well-tamed with gentle, regular handling
  • Best time for handling is the evening
  • Avoid waking suddenly

🧽Cleaning

  • Spot clean daily
  • Full clean every 2-3 weeks
  • Keep a small amount of unsoiled old bedding – retains the hamster’s scent, reducing stress

🩺Quick Health Check
